The Rooster Diagnosed by Mail With Malaria, Diabetes, Cancer, and Syphilis
A doctor in Chensaning, Michigan, folded a square of blotting paper around a single dried drop of blood, sealed it in an envelope, and mailed it to San Francisco. The reply came back with a diagnosis: diabetes, malaria, cancer, and syphilis. The patient was a young Plymouth Rock rooster who had never left his cage.
The man reading the blood was Dr. Albert Abrams, and for a while in the early 1920s he may have been the most famous physician in America.
His credentials were not invented. Abrams was born in San Francisco in 1863, took a medical degree from the University of Heidelberg in 1882 — the Heidelberg archives still hold the certificate — and studied afterward in Berlin, Vienna, Paris, and London. Back home he rose to professor of pathology at Cooper Medical College, the school that became Stanford’s, and was elected president of the San Francisco Medico-Chirurgical Society. He wrote textbooks. He was, by every visible measure, a serious man.
Then radio arrived, and Abrams found his second act. Everything is made of electrons, he reasoned, and electrons vibrate — so every disease must have its own vibration rate, detectable at a distance like a broadcast. He called the system the Electronic Reactions of Abrams, or ERA, and built machines to work it.
The diagnostic machine was the “dynamizer.” A drop of the patient’s blood, dried on paper, went into the box. Wires ran from the box through a chain of rheostats to an electrode pressed against the forehead of a healthy volunteer — the “reagent,” usually a staff member. The room had to be dark. The reagent stood with arms held out to avoid “shorting,” feet on ground plates, and — for reasons Abrams never satisfactorily explained — facing west. The practitioner then tapped, or percussed, the reagent’s abdomen and listened. Where the note went dull told you what the distant patient had.
Percussion was a real and respected clinical technique; physicians still tap chests to find fluid. Abrams had simply relocated the tapping to a stand-in body a thousand miles from the illness.
For treatment there was the “oscilloclast,” a sealed box tuned to the disease’s frequency, meant to cancel it the way a sung note shatters a glass. Abrams would not sell it. He leased it — roughly
00 down and $5 a month — and lessees signed a contract promising never to open the case. Opening it, he said, would ruin the delicate adjustment. Those who opened it anyway found rheostats, condensers, an ohmmeter, and a small motor that hummed, wired together in no coherent order. The Nobel-winning physicist Robert Millikan reportedly called the machines “the kind of devices a ten-year-old would build to fool an eight-year-old.”
It grew fast. In 1919, five people were listed as using Abrams machines; by the autumn of 1922 there were roughly 3,500 ERA practitioners. Blood spots arrived by the thousand, each with a fee attached. Upton Sinclair, having visited the laboratory, published an admiring eleven-page account in Pearson’s Magazine in June 1922 titled “The House of Wonder.”
So the medical establishment started mailing in animals. Sheep’s blood came back as congenital syphilis, with a cure offered for
50. Guinea pig blood was diagnosed as a human with cancer and tuberculosis of the genitourinary tract. And the rooster in Michigan collected four serious human diseases at once. (The AMA’s own archives describe a rooster sample returning a diagnosis of sinus infection and bad teeth — which suggests more than one bird was pressed into service, and that the results were not even consistent with each other.)
Why was it strange?
The strangest part is not that a rooster was diagnosed with syphilis. It is that the practitioners were often not lying.
When Scientific American ran a twelve-part investigation from October 1923 to September 1924, its team worked with a senior Abrams associate identified only as “Doctor X,” who cooperated fully and let the investigators watch him work. They handed him six sealed vials and asked him to name the pathogens inside. He got all six wrong. He objected that the labels were written in red ink, whose vibrations were interfering. They relabeled the vials. He got them wrong again.
Abrams himself was invited repeatedly to be tested — including an offer from California physicians to supply blood from 200 diagnosed patients at the University of California and Stanford clinics, with the records opened to him right after he wrote his diagnoses. He declined.
What did scientists learn?
The verdict Scientific American published in September 1924 has aged into one of the sharpest sentences in the history of medical testing: “At best it is all an illusion. At worst, it is a colossal fraud.”
The illusion is the useful half. A percussion note is a judgment call — a listener deciding whether a sound is dull or resonant. If that listener already knows what answer the machine is supposed to give, the answer arrives. This is the ideomotor effect: small, sincere, unconscious movements and perceptions steered by expectation rather than by evidence. Doctor X was not cheating. He was hearing what he expected to hear.
The fix is blinding — keeping the person who reads the result ignorant of which sample is which. The moment anyone imposed that condition, ERA stopped working. And the red-ink excuse is the tell: a theory that can explain away every failure cannot be tested at all.
How does it affect us today?
Abrams died of bronchopneumonia in January 1924, at sixty, days before a fraud trial in Jonesboro, Arkansas, at which he was to testify. His machines outlived him by decades, spawning imitators — the Radioclast, the Drown Radio Therapeutic Instrument, the Ellis Micro-Dynameter — and it took the Food and Drug Administration until the 1960s to seize and destroy them in bulk. That grinding campaign is a direct ancestor of the device-regulation system that now governs everything from pacemakers to pulse oximeters.
The larger inheritance is procedural. Blinded testing, control samples, and the refusal to accept a practitioner’s confidence as evidence are standard now, in part because a generation of doctors watched an unblinded box confidently diagnose poultry.
Fun fact
Abrams claimed his machine could read more than disease. In the September 1922 issue of his journal Physico-Clinical Medicine, he published a chart showing which regions of the abdomen went dull for Catholics, Protestants, Methodists, Jews, Theosophists, and Seventh-day Adventists — a diagram, in effect, for percussing a stranger’s religion.
A note: the funny part of this story is the rooster. The unfunny part is that people with treatable illnesses spent their money and their time on these machines instead of care that might have helped.
