The Baghdad Battery: The 2,000-Year-Old 'Battery' That Probably Never Held a Charge

A clay jar the size of a coffee mug, plugged shut with tar. Inside it, a thin copper tube; inside that, a corroded iron rod. To the museum director who described it in the 1930s, the little assembly looked unmistakable — it was a battery, built in ancient Mesopotamia, perhaps a thousand years before anyone in Europe knew electricity existed. The idea was electric in every sense. There was just one problem: almost no archaeologist who has examined it since believes a word of it.

The Baghdad Battery: The 2,000-Year-Old 'Battery' That Probably Never Held a Charge

What happened?

The object now famous as the “Baghdad Battery” was reportedly dug up in 1936 at Khujut Rabu, a site northeast of Baghdad, near the ruins of Ctesiphon — the capital of the Parthian and later Sasanian empires. It is a small ochre-colored ceramic vessel, about 15 centimeters tall, its neck broken off. Wedged inside and sealed with bitumen (natural asphalt) sits a copper cylinder roughly 26 millimeters across and 9 centimeters tall, with a closed bottom. Down the center of that cylinder runs a heavily oxidized iron rod, held in place by another asphalt stopper.

Enter Wilhelm König, a German working at the National Museum of Iraq. In a 1938 paper provocatively titled (in translation) “A Galvanic Element from the Parthian Period?”, König proposed that the jar was a primitive electrochemical cell — a battery. Fill it with an acidic liquid like vinegar or wine, he reasoned, and the copper and iron could behave as two electrodes, producing a trickle of current. He further speculated that ancient craftsmen had used such cells to electroplate gold onto silver objects.

It was a tidy, thrilling story, and it spread fast. After a sensational write-up appeared in a 1939 issue of the magazine Astounding Science-Fiction, an electrical engineer named Willard Gray at General Electric’s plant in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, built a replica, filled it with copper sulphate solution, and reported that it “worked quite well for a short time.” Decades later, in 2005, the television show MythBusters wired ten hand-made replicas together with lemon juice and measured 4.33 volts — enough, overnight, to faintly electroplate a token, and enough to deliver a mild jolt through acupuncture needles.

So the artifact can be made to generate electricity. That is not really in dispute. The question is whether it was ever meant to.

Why was it strange?

The strangeness here isn’t the jar — it’s what we wanted the jar to be. A working battery in roughly the first few centuries AD would mean ancient Mesopotamians had stumbled onto electrochemistry some 1,600 years before Alessandro Volta built his famous “voltaic pile” in 1800. It would be a piece of technology arriving wildly out of sequence, with no surrounding toolkit of wires, switches, or written knowledge to support it. That gap is exactly the kind of out-of-place puzzle that makes a great story and a terrible explanation. The temptation to look at two metals and a pot of acid and shout “battery!” turns out to say more about the twentieth century, which was awash in batteries, than about the people who actually made the object.

What did scientists learn?

When specialists looked closely, the battery interpretation sprang leaks — sometimes literally. The copper cylinder doesn’t poke out past the asphalt plug, so there’s no obvious way to attach a second wire and complete a circuit. The bitumen seal, which softens with heat, would make a maddening lid for a working cell, since electrolyte has to be topped up regularly. Tests by researcher Emmerich Paszthory found that sealing the copper tube as the originals were sealed choked off the oxygen the reaction needed and stopped current production almost immediately. He also noted that an iron rod used as an electrode should erode at the neck where it meets the liquid — yet the surviving rod’s tapered shape shows no such wear.

The electroplating angle collapsed too. If these jars had plated metal, chemists would expect copious copper salts left in the pot and copper deposits on the iron; none of the telltale residues have been found. And König’s original “evidence” — gilded silver objects he assumed were electroplated — turned out, on examination, to be ordinary fire-gilding done with mercury. As the British Museum’s Paul Craddock put it, “There’s never been any irrefutable evidence to support the electroplating theory.”

So what was it? The likeliest answer is far quieter. Nearly identical sealed vessels had been excavated earlier at Seleucia in 1930 and at Ctesiphon in 1931 — and those contained rolled organic material, including what looked like papyrus, wrapped around bronze cylinders. Archaeologists read them as containers for sacred or magical scrolls: spells, blessings, or protective charms, with the metal and the seal serving ritual rather than electrical purposes. The Baghdad jar itself was found near so-called incantation bowls used to ward off demons. Getty conservation scientist David A. Scott concluded the electroplating idea was “clearly untenable,” and archaeologist Elizabeth Stone, after decades of work in Iraq, said flatly in 2012 that she didn’t know “a single archaeologist who believed that these were batteries.”

How does it affect us today?

The Baghdad Battery has become a textbook case in how a confident label can outrun the evidence — and how hard a good myth is to unplug. It is a fixture of “ancient mystery” television and a favorite of ancient-astronaut speculation, even though the scholarly verdict has been settled for years. That makes it genuinely useful: it’s a clean lesson in the difference between can and did. Yes, two metals and an acid make a cell. No, that doesn’t mean a ritual jar was an appliance. Whenever a single dramatic interpretation skips over a mundane one that fits the surrounding finds better, the battery is the cautionary tale to remember. There’s a melancholy coda, too: the original artifact’s whereabouts have been unknown since the looting that followed the 2003 invasion of Iraq, so the most famous “battery” in archaeology can no longer even be re-examined.

Fun fact

In 2005, MythBusters wired ten replica jars in series and got them to deliver a noticeable zap through acupuncture needles — which is how they ranked the legend “plausible.” But notice the catch: ten linked cells did the trick, and not a single archaeological find shows these jars ever connected to one another. One jar alone is a feeble novelty; the impressive demonstrations all quietly required nine extra jars the ancients left no sign of using.
