When the Experiment Left the Lab

A wave of molasses, a bridge that galloped, a whale and half a ton of dynamite, lead in the gasoline, and a footbridge that closed because people walked on it.

Some experiments stay in the notebook. These ones got outside. A tank of molasses failed and a neighborhood drowned. A bridge began to gallop in a wind that was not a storm. A city tried to remove a dead whale with dynamite, and the crowd was standing too close. The calculation was confident. The street was where it got checked.

The molasses left the tank as a wave. Galloping Gertie taught engineers to treat wind as a load, not a breeze. The whale was the Oregon job done with half a ton of dynamite. Lead in the gasoline was one chemist’s answer to an engine problem, and the atmosphere kept the receipt. The wobbly bridge closed because people walked on it.

This page is the shelf those departures share. Start here for the molasses, the bridge, and the whale, and for the longer record of plans that met a public they had not modeled.
